Renee Zellweger is Making Me Sad

Renee Zellweger

Renee Zellweger – an earlier appearance.

Renee Zellweger is not hot.  Sofia Vargara is hot.  Megan Fox is hot. Jessica Alba is hot. Renee Zellweger is not. And that’s why Renee Zellweger is making me sad.

You loved the movie Jerry McGuire, right? Everyone loved that movie.  Sports, relationships, the movie had it all.  Tom Cruise was great in the movie. Cuba Gooding Jr. was great in the movie. Jonathan Lipnicki (the kid) was great in the movie. But it was Renee Zellweger as Dorothy Boyd who was awesome in that movie.  I question any guy who didn’t love Dorothy by the end of that movie.  Seriously, you should not let such a guy date your sister, daughter, friend, etc.  Zellweger was not hot in the movie though she was definitely cute. It was the character of Dorothy Boyd that was great.

Now, we live in reality. Actors and actresses get various roles. Some are fortunate and talented enough to get a wide variety of roles. Some are typecast and seem to play the same role in every movie.  Regardless of which category the actor and actress falls into, the general public does not truly know the individual. I don’t care how often you read People Magazine or watch Entertainment Weekly.  Actors and actresses have publicists and agents who stage and direct their moves.  I think every sensible person knows this. Yet, many of us still feel like we know our favorite actors and actresses and care about them beyond their ability to entertain.

So, I was definitely one of those guys who was in love with Dorothy Boyd by the end of that movie. Because of that love, I became a fan of Zellewegger. While I’m not the type to obsess over actors and actresses, I did watch a bunch of her movies including the first Bridget Jones Diary movie. Ms. MMK definitely enjoyed that one way more than me, laughing at parts which I couldn’t understand. Despite my confusion over Bridget Jones and refusal to watch the 2nd one (Have a ladies night out for that one, dear), I remained in love with Renee Zellweger. This loved encouraged me to actually pick my head up and read celebrity news or watch celebrity television if it was about her. I felt sorry for her when she had that short lived marriage to Kenny Chesney.

All this is leading up to my point. I pity Renee Zellweger. Really, I do. Now, she has had some giant successes in her career and must have made a lot of money because of that. She has had the opportunity to live a life that many dream about. Yet, it certainly seems she is unfulfilled. And why? It’s because of me.  And you too, by the way.

Now before I explain why I think Zellweger is unfulfilled, consider her response to the fans reaction to her dramatic difference in appearance. Zellweger spoke to People Magazine and said, “I’m glad folks think I look different! I’m living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I’m thrilled that perhaps it shows.”  She goes on to say she is healthier and living a more relaxed life style. If this is all true, well good for her.  Be happy, the heck with the fans/public. Live your life. Unfortunately, I find it hard to believe someone who is so happy feels a need to change their appearance so dramatically.

Here’s my thinking. Zellweger went so long without a role that had she filed for unemployment, her benefits would have run out. Think about going so long between roles after having been so popular at one point. Self-doubt had to creep in. Imagine the thought process – I got roles when I was younger. The younger women get roles. It’s one thing to be cute when you’re 25 or 35 but what about 45?

The public wants youth. They want beauty. An actress can’t get old. She can’t lose her looks. What is she then? We demand those up on the screen look a certain way.

How sad!

Yet it’s not just actresses or even actors who also are expected to keep up their looks, we want that from each other. Our society is obsessed with youth and looks. Think about it. When you see someone you haven’t seen in a while, your first though is, “Wow he/she got old,” or “Damn, he/she is aging well.” What about when you look at pictures of yourself? How often does the though go through your mind, “I was so young!” Then you sigh and lament your participation in the aging process – the greying hair, the wrinkles around the eyes, the ache in the knees.

Renee Zellweger is not hot. And that should have been okay. In our society, some succumb to pressure – be it internal or external or both – and refuse to accept the ravages of time.  My love, Rennee Zellweger, is making me sad.

  1. You know, maybe I don’t have such a discerning eye, but I don’t think her change is so very drastic. I think her face looks a little tight is all.

As a woman, I can tell you that it is very hard when you reach a certain age and look in the mirror and see that your face is falling, regardless of your station or career. I think a great many women would jump at the chance to have a lift if only they had the time and money.

    • You have to look again – the change is dramatic.
I wonder if you are right that a great many women would just at the chance. The thing is when a person gets that much work done, they don’t end up looking so great.
We all feel a sense of vanity. I know I was even more handsome when I was in my 20’s, but those days have passed.

    • Her face looks dramatically different. She clearly did alot of work. Whether it was all at once is not clear but it was a short time period.

  2. I love the Bridget Jones series!!! I also loved the movie New in Town!! It is hard to get older and be famous…not everyone can be Meryl Streep!

    • Meryl Streep came up in the conversation Ms. MMK and I had as well. I agree with you it must be hard to get older in the spotlight. Ms. MMK had a GREAT LINE – the money would be better spent on therapy.

    • She did state a reason as I noted. However, if work was the issue, it’s hard to imagine her coming out and saying that directly.

  3. My oh my… I just LOVE this post… even though I don’t share your opinion, I still love the post! I admire you for feeling sad for poor Renee Zellweger…
I have to admit I love the Bridget Jones movies and she was quite acceptable in “Chicago”… and everything else was more “common”… in my opinion she isn’t the best actress there is.
I personally think she might have had some plastic surgery since her eyes look much wider than they did before, but this is only my personal opinion.
As for her marriage: I was feeling more bad for Kenny Chesney… but that’s another story too…
What can I say? I can’t stand Renee Zellweger. Call it a “natural antipathy”, it’s hard to describe otherwise. Now she’s getting older, doesn’t have any movie offers and might be just around to kill time, I’m waiting for her Autobiography. – Eventually, after I read it, I will decide to feel sad for her. *chuckle*

  4. It is a shame that getting older in Hollywood just doesn’t work for women. For men, eh, not so bad, really. Morgan Freeman is doing great still, right? (I don’t really know.) If there were more roles for older actresses, that would be great. Driving Miss Daisy remake, anyone? Hey, wait. Was that with Morgan Freeman? Wow, how my mind works sometime. By the end of the movie he was really looking old! Anyway, rom-coms are a big thing, and rom-coms with grey-haired folks aren’t going to bring in the major demographic of the younger generations. It’s just a tough biz.

    • I do think it’s harder on women in Hollywood. However, plenty of guys find it more difficult to get roles as they age and their looks fade.

  5. I have a couple of years left before I hit cross the 4-0 line, and I am starting to understand what all the fuss is about. There’s a very strange, stinging void that hits some women when all of a sudden we don’t feel attractive anymore. When we’re 22, pretty much any man finds us cute. When we’re 42, only the guys our own age and older might find us desirable.

It shouldn’t matter, I know this, but it does.

  6. I love Renee, always have and always will. This is life, think of how TV is the reason so many are brainwashed into this idea of youth and beauty, and Renee is right in middle of all that! Like so many others!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look to God and think of his master plan for our lives and our faces….let yourself grow old with dignity and stop looking for the worlds acceptance! It backfires more time than not!!!!!

    • I’m a big fan too! I don’t know how any guy could not have loved her after watching Jerry McGuire.
I wish she would have accepted the aging process. As you said, it backfired. Actresses in particular are under intense pressure to maintain a certain look. It’s not reality.
